The 4-day workweek will make our lives better

💡 What, how, and when about the 4-day workweek

Heyo 👋 Jordan here,

Today, we'll be talking about something big coming around the corner:

The 4-day workweek.

Before we go there, this might be interesting to you:

I made the weirdest gadget to enable me to communicate better. Thought you might find it interesting.

Back to the 4-day workweek.

🏖️ The 4-day workweek

The 4-day work week might sound like a pipe dream, but it is happening.

"But, surely, people are making less money, right?"

Nope. Same salaries.

"But then, they must be less productive?"

Nope. Productivity is the same if not higher.

Sounds too good to be true. But it isn't.

The work week has been shrinking during the 20th century (and productivity was rising) until, in the age of AI and robots and automation, someone decided against it.

Now, after a 6-month study of how it affects employees, the results are in.

🧐 How does it work

The premise is simple:

You work Monday to Thursday. You rest Friday, Saturday, and Sunday.

The effects:

  1. 8.14% increased revenue generated — the 33 participating companies generated an average of 8.14% increase in revenue.

  2. 37.55% more revenue compared to the previous year — the revenue increase was 37.55% higher compared to the year before. With the world facing a recession this is insane.

  3. 96.9% of employees wanted to continue this work schedule — 875/903 employees preferred the 4-day workweek to their previous schedule. Self-rated mental health, work satisfaction, and productivity rose by at least 10 points.

This is a paradigm shift for any online business.

Online business? Can't everyone benefit from a 4-day work week?

Maybe.

A lot of the companies ready to experiment with something as crazy as reducing the working hours to 80% and keeping pay the same are in fast-moving, creative industries.

This is the pinch of salt for this study.

If you're leading or in one such company — great! it might be something well worth considering.

If you're in brick-and-mortar or selling people-hours business — this might have different results for your business.

We all need to think critically, experiment, and learn. But this is a great source of inspiration and a great next experiment to run.

And the potential for making everyone's lives better... is crazy.

🔥 Epic Things

  • Headline Studio — I still find writing headlines tough. I'm learning but here and there a useful tool comes in to help me out. Coschedule's headline studio uses AI to do that.

  • Grammarly — If you want to write better, Grammarly is the best tool for the job. I use it daily.

  • Descript — Cutting video is hard work. Even when you've gotten used to complex editing software. With Descript it's just as easy as editing a document.
